The Soft Glow from Lights of Love Creates a Magical Night

Hundreds of pets were remembered or honored at ARC’s tenth “Lights of Love” ceremony on December 10th. Coconut Point in Estero once again hosted this annual favorite and the weather was picture perfect. Crowds gathered waterside to listen to the melodic tunes provided by Jim Morris and witness the lighting ceremony conducted by Ellen Puckett and Lisa Petruska. The chance to win raffle prizes was provided by the local Parrothead club who are huge fans of Jim Morris!

Trees lined the stage and displayed white lights symbolizing pets remembered and colored lights symbolizing pets still by our side. Pets accompanied by their guardians were treated to their very own photo session with none other than Santa!

Added to this year’s festivities was a food drive to benefit the Save the Pets Alliance. Over eight hundred families temporarily struggling in these hard times are able to keep and feed their pets due to the efforts of ARC and the Harry Chapin Food bank.  Steve Shortino of Space Box Storage graciously provided a transport truck to collect these much needed donations.

The Lights of Love is always a touching way to remember pets that have brought so much joy to our lives in the past. It was also a wonderful opportunity to honor the ones that are still with us bringing daily joy to our lives. ARC thanks you all for embracing this annual tradition.

Golf Anyone?

PC 57

Well we don’t have a course out at ARC but we use to be able to give you a ride! That ended recently because our little golf cart just did not want to start up anymore.  Now that is serious stuff at ARC because this little baby transports cats to the clinic, heavy bags of litter and cases upon cases of cat food across the grounds. Also less glamorous but high on the importance list…….trips to the garbage dumpster!

TuffyWhat were we to do??? Not to worry because the owner of B&W Golf Cars Inc, David Parker,  is an avid supporter of ARC and took our precious vehicle in for an overhaul. New batteries, headlights, tires, windshield and the shocker of all…….a fantastic paint job complete with ARC logo and feline silhouettes! Thank you David for putting the smile back on the faces of our Animal Care Team staff members!

PC 63Prior to delivery, Dave Hamilton mentioned he was looking for a Maine Coon kitten and as his luck would have it we had one in a foster home.  It’s no wonder he and Connie fell in love with the photo of this little boy right away. Delivery of our “better then new” golf cart coincided with delivery of a precious little kitten.

Smiles all around for everyone…yeah!

Forrest in Final Stages of Knee Recovery

Forest 5 croppedWow it’s been a long haul for me but I am taking my rehabilitation very serious! I am back in my own lodge. That doggie door though…..now that had to be cut taller because it was not really designed for a fella like me! I am also hoping someone will go out on www.kuranda.com and order the xxlarge bed for my 160 pound frame.  The normal ones just don’t fit me so for now I snuggle on several comforters but I rather have those fluffed up on a bed like the rest of the gang out here!

Now that my leg can deal with added activity I work it most of the day. This will help build back my muscle mass. For an extra challenge I get to do PT in ARC’s agility field. I am encouraged to step up and down on a pedestal….course the folks at AForrest 4RC like to put me “on a pedestal” anyway because I am so noble!

Come on out and visit me and maybe just maybe you’ll want me to be your next best buddy.

ARC Called Upon to Assist in One of the Largest Cat Rescue Missions in US History

December should normally be the time of year to anticipate the joy of the holidays and quietly reflect on blessings received over the year.  Instead for six hundred cats living at 10th Life Sanctuary in Clewiston this was a time of panic.  Living in deplorable conditions, these cats had a matter of weeks to be absorbed by other shelters before theirs was permanently closed.

ARC’s ability to intake is directly related to our daily adoption numbers. However in this situation, with hundreds of helpless lives at stake, we made the decision to utilize our canine training center as a triage. After conducting background and reference checks our application to assist was approved by the University of Florida and Labelle Animal Control.

Cats 25Our first trip to Clewiston resulted in thirty-six cats finding new life at ARC.  These orphans received medical care and underwent observation for two weeks. This caution was necessitated due to the disease and parasites that were rampant in their former environment. We asked the public to consider adopting from our current population while the new arrivals received their care.

The response was heartwarming and immediate. ARC was able to make a second trip for ten more cats.  Then we were contacted by Best Friends in Utah and asked if we could arrange delivery of five cats to them. Thank you Karin Evans for making that last minute trip to the airport which made a difference in the lives of five more cats.cats 53
The closure of the 10th Life Sanctuary represents one of the largest cat rescues in US history. This effort was lead by the ASPCA, HSUS, University of Florida, La Belle Animal Control and DART.  Shelters on the east coast, northern Florida and Georgia took in cats and in total 405 of the 600 cats were successfully relocated.  ARC was able to take in the largest number…46 in total.

Now we are asking for your help in supporting the needs of these cats. Getting them to ARC was the easy part. Providing for them will be harder. Some will find homes but many will not and we will do our best to provide them an environment filled with love and care.

cats 43Please send a contribution today and mark your envelope “Cat Rescue Mission”. Together we can make sure that love and support is always there……….and so is ARC.

Here Kitty Kitty…Where are you anyway?

CS 8An ongoing goal of ARC is to increase cat adoptions while maintaining the quality of the homes they go to. While we have always had healthy numbers of visitors looking for a cat to adopt far too many went away stating “we did not see what we were thinking of”. With over 400 cats at ARC how could this be???

With hopes for improvement, Dr. Terry Curtis, an animal behaviorist from the University of Florida was brought in to review how we house our cats and offer them for adoption. Dr Curtis determined that how ARC houses its cats while a cutting edge environment for the cats is inadvertently part of the adoption problem.  Having people look at over 400 cats in thirteen different buildings actually resulted in difficulty reaching a decision!!! Sometimes too much choice is just that..too much! Who would have guessed?

The first recommendation was to designate two houses, populate them with a variety of highly adoptable cats and funnel the public to those houses first. We saw an instant spike in the rate of adoptions.

The second recommendation was to create a Kitten Cottage that centralized all the younger cats in order to make viewing kittens easier and to increase our adoptions at Petco and Pet Depot.

Step three was the hardest. Socialize the shy & feral ones so they could “graduate” into the two main adoption buildings.  In this respect consistency was the key.  We selected the same time of day to do socialization which included talking, treat feedings, toy time and eventually petting. Volunteers were showed how to enhance the staffs’ efforts and soon we had a steady stream of socialized cats “graduating”.

We have used these same techniques on shy cats rescued from 10th Life Sanctuary and to date four of those have already been adopted. Pictures speak a thousand words and here are some of our reclusive cats now displaying personalities that will certainly find them homes at a faster rate.

Steady adoptions mean steady intakes………an ongoing ARC goal!

Treasure…or Trash?

FC 39Kathy O'Brian FCYou just would not know unless you came out to our antique Appraisal Day!! Curiosity and the desire to help support ARC inspired the presentation of over two hundred items  to ARC’s Antique Appraisal Day Jan 16th. Nestled in the Bell Tower complex, the Crowne Plaza was the perfect host and had every detail taken care of to make sure everything went smoothly.
Several of those “hidden treasures” turned out to be valued in the five figure range and created more than a few gasps of delight!  On the flip side even if an item was less then “precious” and elicited a groan they were still for the most part held in high sentimental esteem.  Carol Maddox FC
Special thanks go to our appraisers whose knowledge and expertise covered an incredible range of items. Oil paintings, antique jewelry, chairs, autographed sports memorabilia, watches, tea sets, china, vases……..even an extravagant hair comb from Chile! Deftly reviewing items were appraisers Peter Curran (from the Antique Roadshow), Helaine Fendleman, Henry Eckert and Ben. We deeply appreciate their time and energy which helped raise over two thousand dollars for ARC!!

Starlight Auction a Great Success and Fun Too!

As a Board member of ARC, there are many opportunities to participate in various events and fund raisers for this special organization. ARC has always been very near and dear to my heart. I approached them in 2000 when I was first starting my company to see if they would like me to build them a website. They happily obliged and the current http://www.animalrefugecenter.com was born. Over the course of the last 10 years, I have seen many significant changes to ARC but the Starlight Auction has become a very clear definition of what it means to grow as an organization.  This event makes it crystal clear how well ARC has done for itself and the little furry friends about whom it cares so deeply.

In the early 2000’s as a thank you for the website, my husband and I were invited to their auction. It was still at Sanibel Harbour, but I remember how the silent auction items were lined up along the sides of the walls outside the event room. Once inside, there was about a 1/4 of a ballroom being utilized and probably about 75 people in attendance.  This year’s auction brought in approximately 240 people and over 300 auction items! Considered the best ever, ARC’s Starlight Auction is quickly becoming one of the most successful charity fundraisers in Southwest Florida; no small feat in a clearly suffering economy. We may be small but we are mighty!

There is no better place to hold a venue than Sanibel Harbour. There is something magical and heartwarming about the place (which is why I chose it for my wedding). It has true southern tropic charm. The resort is the perfect backdrop to ARC’s Starlight Auction- an evening of socializing, dining and fun. It now takes up an ENTIRE ballroom with the dining and live auction on one side and the silent auction on the other.

There are over 300 items in the silent auction- everything from gift baskets with Starbucks coffee items, fishing trips, hotel stays, TVs, electronics and more to fine jewelry and gorgeous works of art donated by only the best local artists.  Since the auction is always the Saturday after Thanksgiving, its a great way to kick off the holiday season and do a little shopping for yourself!

The live auction is always packed full with fantastic items and is filled with anticipation and excitement. This year we auctioned off fine jewelry donate by The Cedar Chest, home deco items from Robb and Stucky, and fine artwork by famous artists Nancy Colby, Wellington Ward and Daryl Pottorf.  There are even safari trips to Africa available!  If you’ve never been to a live auction, you MUST attend this auction to see for yourself. The auctioneer is superb- encouraging the bids with passion and professionalism. You can feel the tension and excitement in the air as he calls off each item and starts the bidding. The best feeling, however, is when the final bid is called and you know its all going to a great cause.

The main part of the program is as heartwarming as it is special. The President of ARC, Lee Allor, always does a great job expressing what ARC is all about; how we save helpless and homeless animals and provide for them when no one else can.  At ARC, each animal is guaranteed a “forever home” in the event that no one adopts them. As a no-kill shelter we are dedicated and committed to this cause. However, caring for several hundred animals in this way is challenging and costly. Without the financial support of its donors, ARC and the many animals we currently care for would not survive. Though the auction is a fun, upbeat event, it is always important to spread the message of our cause and show how important it is that our donor base continue to grow and help us. The animals of ARC know no recession; they need help and they rely on us to give it to them.

Behind the scenes, the auction is a flurry of anticipation among all of  ARC’s volunteers.  Our volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization. Second only to the funding that pays our bills, the volunteers add the special magic that makes ARC such a successful organization. They work tirelessly for months preparing for this event. Once it arrives, they are there days ahead of time decorating, setting up…preparing for ARC’s biggest fund raiser of the year.  They come early and stay late-  and never ask for or expect anything. Their time is valuable and they donate it through their passion and kindness. Then it’s show time. Our volunteers work hard to make everything run smoothly and without incident. They sacrifice a holiday weekend away from friends and family to help our important cause. They work tirelessly all night to service our guests; ensuring they have the best night possible. To them we are forever grateful.

There there are the Board members. I can tell you first hand that they don’t like recognition. They leave their names off things as much as possible and try as hard as they can not to take credit. I have only been on the Board for one year so I am hardly one to lay claim to anything great that ARC has done to this point.  The auction relys on them in so many ways; securing sponsorships, putting silent and live auctions together, steering the auction committee, working with Sanibel Harbour’s banquet and catering committees, putting on the auction presentation and working backstage.   They do this in concert with staff and volunteers. ARC is lucky to have members on our board that have dedicated their lives to ARC. The truth is, that though I can appreciate the fact that these kind people don’t want to be recognized, no great organization can become great without leadership and teamwork.  It is through their compassion and commitment to the animals- a true love of all creatures great and small that fuels their drive to keep going even when there seems that there is little hope.  They each work with our fantastic staff at ARC to love and care for animals with challenges like FIV.  They nurse beaten and abused animals back to health and they foster animals when there is just “no room at the Inn.”  They do all of this and never receive any kind of paycheck. It is truly remarkable and has restored my faith in the human condition.

Ultimately the auction is a symphony of  kind and generous people coming together for a common cause. There are many charities out there with much larger voices and pocketbooks than ARC. There are diseases, disasters and destruction that emplore us to help. But it is the voiceless; those that cannot speak or care for themselves who rely on human beings for their survival that are at the forefront of this great event.  There will always be a dog that has been abandoned or a kitten who has been abused. There will always be a cat who is just not “cute” enough to be adopted or a dog that can’t seem to get along with others. Where do they go? Who do they turn to?  It is uncertain whether these animals will ever truly understand what ARC is and does for them, but I will continue to have faith that they sleep better at night when they have food in their stomachs, medicines to alleviate their aches, and a fluffy, dry bed with someone to greet them in the morning.

Please consider attending ARC’s Annual Starlight Auction next year! It is a fantastic event that will not only leave you smiling, it will fill your heart with joy knowing that you have helped a great cause.  For information and to be notified of the event next year, please become a fan of ARC on Facebook by visiting our website, http://www.AnimalRefugeCenter.com and clicking ‘Become a Fan’ at the bottom of the page. Spread the word. Save a life!
